Investment Research

Examine the business, the evidence and the price. DTP’s research guides explain how to connect company facts, valuation assumptions and portfolio purpose. The governing question is why an investment deserves consideration alongside an S&P 500 core.

Start with a published guide

Learn what to look for in a company’s original filings, then work through an example of how purchase price changes an investment case.

Available now: educational guides, a newsletter sample and portfolio methodology. Interactive research tools remain in development.

A framework for investing beside an S&P 500 core: define the role a new investment must serve.

Six investing methods and the questions they ask: understand the distinct questions behind different approaches.

What company filings can tell you before you invest: investigate statements, financing, incentives and business risks.

A good company can still be an expensive investment: work through a fictional valuation and its assumptions.

Why a falling share price does not automatically create a bargain: reassess evidence as well as price.

How we examine an idea

Purpose. Record how the idea was found and what it could contribute beside the core. Distinguish an investor’s documented method from DTP’s adaptations, and make overlap and concentration visible.

Evidence. Examine dated company filings, cash generation, reinvestment, financing, dilution and competition. Keep original sources, reporting periods and missing information alongside the assessment.

Valuation. Use adverse, central and favorable scenarios with explicit assumptions. Explain the contrary case and the evidence that would change the conclusion. A calculation is only as useful as its inputs.

Additional checks for material agreements and disclosures

Where material, review government awards and major customer, supplier, licensing and infrastructure agreements. Distinguish funded work from possible contract ceilings, and assess renewal, cancellation, customer concentration and delivery costs. Connect supported findings to revenue, cash flow and valuation. Grants, partnerships and regulatory milestones need their own assessment.

This is a manual research checklist. U.S. congressional disclosures may raise questions, but their timing, amount ranges and amendments limit what they establish about holdings and performance. Automated contract monitoring and a political-trade feed are not active.

Compare portfolio rules

Read the Portfolio Research Methodology for five hypothetical models with matching starting capital and contributions. The Core + Value model can allocate up to 100% of new weekly contributions to qualifying value opportunities, subject to its 10% non-core position cap. Unallocated contributions go to VOO. The page explains the policy and comparison assumptions; it is not a live tracker.

Research status and upcoming tools

The research framework uses Identified, Watch, Eligible for Entry Review, Paused and Invalidated states. Missing or stale evidence can block advancement, and contradictory evidence can invalidate a thesis. These labels organize research; they do not determine suitability for an individual reader.

Archived company investigations are historical research. The candidate records remain paused; none is currently eligible for entry review. The framework has not established an ability to outperform the S&P 500.

Interactive valuation, regression, portfolio look-through and research tools are in development. A future valuation view must preserve dated inputs and loss periods. A regression view must separate earlier fitting data from later evaluation and explain that historical fit does not establish causation or future returns. Live quotes, connected portfolio accounts and automated trading are not offered.
